ReelShort Shows Free Episodes Hot New Releases

Five Apps, Six Rounds, No Participation Trophies

The era when short-drama apps were a niche curiosity passed some time ago. In Q1 2025, Sensor Tower counted about $700M in global in-app revenue for the category, with the US producing 49% of it. The quarterly figure had climbed to about $750M by Q1 2026, while the full year of 2025 came in at roughly $2.8–3B. ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave are the five names that dominate the conversation, and any shopper who has searched a store for a short reels app has encountered at least one of them. Superficially, they seem identical: vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and reelshort a weekly pass waiting behind the paywall. What you pay and where you can watch hinge on how they differ underneath, in ownership, pricing, platforms and extras. Relying on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026, we put them through six rounds and named a winner in each.

The Big Comparison Grid

Before the rounds, take a look at the whole field on a single screen. As of September 2026, the prices match the figures listed in the US App Store, and they vary by country, platform and promotion. For market share, the figures are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. Install counts come from each app’s Google Play listing. Where a cell says “not reported”, no reliable source published the figure, and we would sooner leave a gap than guess. Read the grid as the scoreboard and the rounds below as the commentary.

Round 1: Ownership and Size

The incumbent is ReelShort, and it continues to carry the most weight. In August 2022, Crazy Maple Studio, a Sunnyvale company backed by China’s COL Group, launched it, and MPA credits it with about 29% of the market outside China. Its 2025 revenue stands at $785M in MPA’s estimate, and MPA projects $1.05B for 2026. DramaBox, run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology, launched in April 2023 and holds about 21%. In Q1 2025, ReelShort was ahead $130M to $120M according to Sensor Tower, but by Q1 2026 the two were level at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. Often mistyped as “dreamwave”, DramaWave is the youngest app here, yet it already holds about 13%, and its annualized revenue reportedly topped $700M by Q2 2026. ShortMax, which operates from Hong Kong, seems to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. With 5M+ Android installs, My Drama is the minnow, yet it is the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. For context, GoodShort has about 6% and sits just outside this group. Winner: ReelShort, on market share, but only narrowly.

Round 2: Pricing

This is the round where the apps look most alike. A weekly pass at about $19.99 is offered by ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave in the US App Store, and each one renews automatically. ShortMax also offers a $9.99 “Weekly Pass Pro”, and DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99. DramaBox goes a different route, with auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99 plus special offers from $4.99. The only verified monthly plan in these US listings, DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, is the standout. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass add up to about $80, so a monthly plan at less than half that is the smarter buy for steady viewers. Winner: DramaWave, because its monthly plan beats four weekly renewals by a wide margin. Because prices vary by country, platform and promotion, the number on your screen may be different.

Round 3: Free Viewing Options

When it comes to free viewing, the marketing grows loud and the details grow thin. One rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes, and the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, per ReelShort’s own blog. Keep a seven-day check-in streak and you earn 100+ coins, although free reward coins usually expire while paid coins do not. Looking for the easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying? ReelShort also runs official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. Look-alike sites, modded APKs and “unlimited coins” generators are unofficial and never a safe shortcut, so avoid them. Free options exist on DramaBox too, but its exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Winner: ReelShort, clearly.

Round 4: Devices and Platforms

These apps truly split apart over screens. Besides iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, ReelShort also streams in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress syncing across devices. On DramaBox’s side, the website mostly points you back to the app, whereas DramaWave is verified only on its iOS and Android apps. Because its domain redirects to the ShortTV website, ShortMax offers web browsing too. ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show an Apple TV app, but My Drama offers one for tvOS 18 or later, which is its trump card. If a shorts app on your phone is all you need, any of the five will do. The winner: ReelShort overall; My Drama takes the living room.

Round 5: Catalog and Originals

No rival matches ShortMax on raw numbers. The app says it has 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages; as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had produced more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, mostly dubbed Chinese adaptations. DramaWave, which claims 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages, reportedly uses AI to generate more than 80% of its newly released content. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. In response, DramaBox offers an LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis. Since Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years, My Drama has the most intriguing pipeline. Winner: ShortMax, by sheer volume.

Round 6: Bonus Features and Fine Print

DramaWave easily wins this one. Its App Store listing promises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video, and no other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing. For viewers who switch between phone and laptop, ReelShort’s cross-device sync is the next most useful perk. Since it varies more than the prices do, the fine print deserves a look too. On any of these apps, deleting the app does not cancel your subscription, so cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead. According to ShortMax’s terms, refunds are not given “unless the paid product/service is unusable”, while My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Round winner: DramaWave.

Best For: The Final Picks

Because no single short drama app sweeps every round, the best choice comes down to how you watch. My Drama is best for Apple TV, as it is the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. With a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices, ReelShort is best for web viewing. ShortMax’s claimed 50,000+ dramas overshadow everything else in the grid, making it best for sheer volume. DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers, since it pairs offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. For backing the current revenue leader, DramaBox is best: Sensor Tower ranked it first in Q1 2026, and it was picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class. ReelShort is again best for free, legitimate sampling, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Feeling tempted by all five? Choose one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
